Diagram of the Causes of Mortality

Nightingale’s polar area diagram showed British military commanders that poor sanitation, not combat, was killing most soldiers in the Crimean War — and helped push through hospital reform.

During the Crimean War, Florence Nightingale served as a nurse in British field hospitals and observed something the official statistics obscured: soldiers were dying of preventable disease at far higher rates than from wounds in battle. Convincing a military and political establishment that found raw statistical tables dry and unpersuasive required a different approach.

Nightingale designed a polar area diagram — often called a "coxcomb" — divided into twelve wedges, one per month. The area of each wedge represented the number of deaths that month, split into colour-coded segments for preventable disease, wounds and other causes. Viewed side by side, the wedges made an argument no table of numbers could: disease, not combat, was the dominant cause of death, and it fell sharply once sanitary reforms were introduced.

The diagram helped secure support for army medical and sanitary reform, and Nightingale went on to become one of the first statisticians to use graphics deliberately to influence public policy — work that later saw her elected a fellow of the Royal Statistical Society.

The underlying idea still holds: dense operational or clinical data rarely changes minds as a table. Turned into a picture a decision-maker can read in seconds, it can change policy. That principle sits behind a lot of the dashboard and monitoring work Vis Lab builds today.
