French civil engineer Charles Minard spent much of his career visualising infrastructure and trade data, but his best-known work looks backward at history: Napoleon’s catastrophic 1812 invasion of Russia.
A wide tan band traces the army’s advance toward Moscow, narrowing continuously as its width represents the shrinking number of troops still alive. A thinner black band shows the retreat, narrowing further still. The bands are laid over a simplified geographic route, and beneath them a line chart tracks the brutal, falling temperatures the retreating army faced through the winter.
In one static, two-dimensional image, Minard encoded troop numbers, geographic position, direction of travel, temperature and time — roughly six variables at once — without a single interactive control.
